10 Steps to Becoming a Healthier Happier You

People often ask me what they can do to lead a healthier life, and for me that also means leading a happier life. Being healthy isn't just about the food we eat and the exercise we do. It's about the choices we make, the kindness we show ourselves and others, the pace at which we operate and so much more. So, here are my 10 steps to becoming a healthier happier you.

1. EAT WHOLE FOODS

Whilst I don't like the word 'diet', if I was ever going to suggest you follow one, it would be the World War II diet! During this time food was scarce. People didn't have the variety of foods we have on offer today. They ate whole foods and they cooked at home. Most of it was organic by nature because agriculture hadn't yet been influenced by pesticides and hormones. And people were a lot healthier!

2. CHOOSE THE BEST QUALITY INGREDIENTS YOU CAN AFFORD

The food we eat literally becomes the cells in our bodies. It can even change our genes! When I learned this through my studies it seemed so obvious, but it's not something most people know, or think about. If the food your eat becomes YOU, don't you want to eat the best quality food you can afford?

3. EAT AND DRINK MORE OF THE GOOD STUFF

Healthy living shouldn't be about depriving yourself of all the things you love! I encourage clients to add in the good stuff, such as more green leafy veg, more fruit, more pulses and beans, more nuts and seeds, more water, etc. By adding a little more of the good stuff on to your plate, the bad stuff will slowly start to fade away. Try it out and see for yourself!

4. COOK MORE

We have such a variety of foods available to us that we all too often pop into our local curry house on the way home from dinner, or dial in a pizza if we've had a busy day. Cooking your own food at home however makes following steps 1-3 a breeze.

5. IF YOU'RE 5'2 YOU'LL NEVER BE 5'8

This is about accepting your body size, shape and weight for where they're naturally made to be. Whether you're smaller or larger, taller or shorter, top heavy, bottom heavy or narrow from top to bottom, you are PERFECT just as you are!

6. DON't BE PERFECT

Eating the perfect diet isn't realistic, it isn't sustainable and quite frankly it isn't any fun! Healthy living is about being good most of the time, and enjoying a treat every now and again.

7. TAKE ONE STEP AT A TIME

The reason diets don't work is that they're often such a far cry from how you currently live your life, so making it 'the norm' is close to impossible! So how about just taking one step at a time towards living a healthier life? For example, if your diet most consists of take aways or eating out, start by cooking at home a couple of times a week. Or if you eat pretty well but are only active one day a week, try upping your game by walking home from work or checking out a new exercise class with a friend. These small steps can have BIG results. All it requires is taking one step at a time, and soon enough you'll be a much healthier happier you.

8. YOU ARE UNIQUE

Everyone on this planet has different DNA, different genes and different requirements when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle. So don't get swayed by what works for your best friend, your sister, or the article on what supermodels do to stay healthy! Instead, listen to your body, be kind to yourself and find what works for YOU.

9. BEING HEALTHY ISN'T JUST ABOUT WHAT YOU EAT

I often say that I'm a happiness coach, as that's really what I help people work towards. Yes, eating the right foods will help, but there are many people who drink green smoothies every day and have kale and quinoa as their middle names, but that doesn't mean they're healthy, or happy! Being healthy is about nourishing your body with foods that work for you and finding balance in other areas of your life that nourish your soul. These could be your career, your relationships, your exercise routine and any spiritual practices you have. If any of these are out of whack, you'll find your diet will slip, and similarly if you can get your diet back on track, it will have positive effects in other parts of your life.

10. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH HEALTHY HAPPY PEOPLE

Did you know you're much more likely to gain weight and lead an unhealthy lifestyle that's what your friends do?! Just as negative lifestyle choices are contagious, so are positive ones! So, surround yourself with people who love life, are grateful for all they have and who can help you become a healthier, happier you :)
